Born to Die

from Fun Guy by Scott Cooper

about

The newest tune on the CD is “Born to Die.” Well the main riff has been sitting around for years but I finally did something with it earlier this year. I was reading Robert Hunter’s book “A Box of Rain” and saw a poem called “Laughing in the Dark” and the lyrics matched the cadence and phrasing of my music almost to a T, so that was the original version of the song. Then I learned that Danny Carnahan did the same to these lyrics and released it a few years ago. So I wrote my own lyrics, based on a friend of mine’s misconception about me being patient. “It’s easy to be patient when you’re the world’s laziest man”! Dino English helps out on drums along with Matt Hartle on guitar, and the great Dale Ockerman on piano.

lyrics

Some are born to nose the grindstone
one of them not am I
don't rush into the end zone
because you were born to die

doing nothing is one thing I do
almost better than anyone
on the ladder of success
I'm at the bottom rung

it's easy to be patient
so easy to relax
never have to pull my punches
no monkey on my back
cause when my pride has vanished
yeah when my time has come
I can rest on my laurels
knowing I have none

yeah the race toward the bottom
is the only race I can win
just be doing nothing
and lay off the jungle gym

yeah it's easy to do nothing
when you're the worlds laziest man
how I ever had competition
I'll never understand

all the citizens say I'm lazy
warn their kids to keep away
my memory may be hazy
but I got the balls to stay

settle yourself down easy
rest your weary soles
join me in my slumber
I picked up some jelly rolls
lets do nothing together
yeah lets just take a break
I did something just last week
that's as much as I can take

Some are born to nose the grindstone
one of them not am I
don't rush into the end zone
baby you were born to die
baby you were born to die
baby you were born to die
